Our valley has been overtaken by yellow.
Yellow —moving in perfect step with the wind.
Yellow —motioning in mesmerizing unison, like ten thousand synchronized swimmers.
And as yellow has descended to stir and flutter and sway over hill and vale, so the clouds of glittering starlings have returned to rise and dive and float like giant schools of herring over the cornfield.
They turn away as one and the cloud turns black.
They turn aloft and the cloud turns gray.
They lower a wing toward the yellow earth and the cloud is —for an instant— like a shattered mirror reflecting a silver sun.
They dive and the cloud is overtaken with an almost conceited flash of green— like a floating mosaic of emeralds barring entry to the heavens.
It’s easy to see that the yellow shares its Autumn dance with these black, silver, emerald-green starlings here in this valley betwixt the mountains.
Both know its rhythm, its motions, its secrets, its soul.
The yellow clings to the branches as the corn stalks cling to the ground where they were sewn as the starlings cling to some invisible field in the sky above the golden tassels.
All is waiting . . .
watching for the moment when the great conductor will raise his baton.
Yellow swirls around my feet as black and gray and green swirl over my head with Autumn’s every breath.
And I ask myself: how is it that the most vibrant of the seasons displays her colors just weeks before the world turns white?
How can everything change so quickly when to our eyes it moves so slowly?
All we see is yellow.
All we hear is yellow.
All we smell is yellow.
Yet every whisper of the wind warns us: “all will be white soon.”
But we don’t listen.
We are fools, crunching yellow underfoot.
Dancing with the Autumn.
